South African former world heavyweight champion Corrie Sanders has been shot dead during a violent robbery in the Brits area, west of Pretoria. Reports say he was shot while attending a family member's 21st at a restaurant.
The Kalafong hospital in Pretoria has confirmed that Sanders was brought there with a gunshot wound. He died in an operating theatre a few hours ago. Sanders was 46. He was one of South Africa's best known boxers.
In 2003, he became the World Boxing Organization heavyweight champion by defeating Wladimir Klitschko of Ukraine with a second-round knock out. This is still considered one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight boxing history.
