More than 16 000 walkers are pounding the roads of Cape Town this morning, in the annual Blisters for Bread charity walk.

The objective of the annual family fun walk, which is now in its 44th year, is to assist the Peninsula School Feeding Association to raise funds to feed primary and secondary school learners.

The walkers include Western Cape Premier Helen Zille. They are participating in the 5, 10 and 15-kilometre categories.

Event organiser Andy Du Plessis says the funds raised will help make sure that fewer children go to school hungry.

"All the costs are covered by sponsors and supplier discounts, so we are able to ensure that every cent raised from the event, we are able to raise just under a million rand, which will enable us to feed another 1 750 additional children every single day for an entire year," says Du Plessis.
