Police have arrested 50 suspects and recovered 13 rhino horns, two elephant tusks and close to 20 hunting rifles.

The arrests follow a two month long police operation across the country.

About 15 silencers, two pistols, a shotgun and over 150 rounds of ammunition were also seized.

Police spokesperson, Vish Naidoo says on Monday, three suspected rhino poaching syndicates were nabbed in Hoedspruit outside Phalaborwa in Limpopo.

Naidoo says they've been linked to two cases of rhino poaching in the Hoedspruit area.

He says: "The team has been identifying suspects and potential suspects most of them armed with rifles and axes, swords and so forth that are generally used for the removal of rhino horns. These suspects have been arrested on multiple charges."

The suspects face charges of possession of unlawful ammunition and firearms in terms of the endangered species act.

Naidoo says this is a major breakthrough for the police.
