Shale gas production is to take place in the Karoo. (SABC)
Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu says the discovery of shale gas in the Karoo has the potential of diversifying South Africa's energy sector and substantially lowering carbon emissions.
She made the statement in a speech read on her behalf by Mining Policy Director Andre Andreas at a Wits Business School seminar on new legislation to regulate the exploration of the gas.
Shabangu has stressed the importance of making sure that surrounding communities benefit from such activities.
“We need to ensure that communities are educated about the exploration methods and benefits that can be realised from the development of shale gas and further that they are informed about the regulations that seek to augment the protection of water resources and for the protection of the environment as prescribed in Section 24 of the Constitution."
