The Defence Department says the final decision on the deployment of the military to violence-ridden areas on the Cape Flats lies with President Jacob Zuma.

Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, has confirmed a request from Police Minister, Fikile Mbalula, for the deployment.

Mbalula's request followed the recent killing of 18 people in Philippi East and widespread gang violence in other areas.

Defence Department spokesperson, Joy Nonzukiso-Peter says the letter has been received by the office of the minister and the minister has received it.

She says the minister does not have the final say on deployment.

"There is one commander in chief in the Republic of South Africa and that is the president. The president would have to have a final say, the minister does not deploy," says Nonzukiso-Peter.
