South Africa's record maize harvest for 2017 is estimated around 16 million tonnes. This poses a problem to farmers as it will cause the price of maize to fall.

North West MEC for Agriculture Manketse Tlhape says while the record harvest is good news for food security, farmers must be ready to store some of their crops

“We are having a crop masification program, we will be tagging them along. Yes you know that for this year they have yielded 10 percent of the harvest to assist so that we are able to reach a more bigger number in the main. But this is something that will bring awareness to them that as much as we want food security when the yield is much, the harvest is higher, the prices go down that is why we are having storage facilities. They must come and store 16 and wait until the prices goes up,” said Tlhape.
