Management at Lilly Mine in Mpumalanga say the drilling of a second escape route is complete.
A team of experts have gone underground to assess whether it is safe to resume the search for three workers inside a container under rock.
Pretty Nkambule, Yvonne Mnisi and Solomon Nyirenda were working in a container office when it fell into an 80m-deep sinkhole nearly a month ago.
Rescue operations have been delayed by subsequent rock falls.
Lilly Mine spokesperson, Coetzee Zietsman says:
"After completing the second escape we were able to send more teams down to assess the situation they have been in and out of the mine and are compiling their report and we are waiting for a final report we don’t want to risk any other lives and we are hoping that soon we will send more workers down and start the process again."
