On 10 December 1996 President Nelson Mandela signed the final draft of the constitution into law effective from 3 February 1997.

The Constitution was signed on International Human Rights Day and is recognised internationally.

It was signed at the George Thabe stadium in Sharpeville, Vereeniging, in remembrance of the 69 South Africans who were gunned down by police in Sharpeville for protesting against the apartheid pass laws in 1960.

The date of the Sharpeville massacre, 21 March, is recognised as South Africa’s Human Rights Day.
