The Elders, a group of independent global leaders, want their new campaign called "Walk Together" to be an encouragement to people across the world to carry forward the values of Madiba. The campaign was launched in Cape Town, as part of celebrating International Mandela Day.

The year-long programme will support communities on issues of peace, health, justice and equality.

One of the Elders and wife of late Nelson Mandela, Graca Machel, says while they are driving the initiative, it is up to individuals to espouse and live out the values of the former President.

“How are we stepping into Madiba's footsteps and continue to walk with him on the values he has left us? It’s up to individuals to take deep thinking and say, how am I living my life to honour and continue the freedoms Madiba quite rightly said - it is in your hands.”

Another elder, an activist in Pakistan's women's movement and international champion of human rights, Hina Jilani, says using Madiba's name creates awareness on a global level.

“This walk is not only for SA, countries with own national heroes and own struggles. Mandela is universal and everybody relates to his struggle for dignity and freedom. So it’s his name we use to get people to stand up collectively for their rights.”
