Mandla Mandela urged communities to live in unity.

The grand-son of late former president, Nelson Mandela, Mandla Mandela says they are overwhelmed by the support the Mandela Day Marathon has received.

More than 15 000 runners braved the cold weather in KwaZulu-Natal to participate in the 42.2 kilometre long marathon, whose route traces the footsteps of the legendary icon.

The 2017 Nelson Mandela Marathon started in the Imbali Township in Pietermaritzburg and wove its way to Howick, where Mandela was captured.

Mandla Mandela urged communities to live in unity.

“It's just over whelming to see South Africans across the landscape of our country coming together to celebrate Madiba's legacy but also to see our neighbouring countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region coming in and the larger African continent. It was a wonderful experience; it truly shows that Madiba was an African statesman and also a global icon. It was very pleasing to us to see that we are now getting more competitive South Africans in different categories.”
